Hepatitis B Core Antibody (IgM):

Fasting Required: No
Lab: Quest Diagnostics
Specimen: Blood
Results: Test run Mon-Fri; Average processing time 3-5 days
Note: Result turnaround times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Special Instructions: Dietary supplements containing biotin may interfere in assays and may skew results to be either falsely high or falsely low. For patients receiving the recommended daily doses of biotin, draw samples at least 8 hours following the last biotin supplementation. For patients on mega-doses of biotin supplements, draw samples at least 72 hours following the last biotin supplementation.

Limitations: Results obtained from immunosuppressed patients should be interpreted with caution. Patients receiving mouse antibody therapy may produce false-negative results. False-positives may be detected shortly after immunization to influenza and with patients with hypergammaglobulinemia, positive rheumatoid factor, and connective tissue disorders.

Description: Can be used to help detect acute and chronic HBV infections; the IgM antibody is the first antibody produced after infection with HBV.

Alternative Name(s): Anti-HBc, IgM
