Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGAb):

Fasting Required: No
Lab: Quest Diagnostics
Specimen: Blood
Results: Average processing time 3-5 Days
Note: Result turnaround times are an estimate and are not guaranteed. Our reference lab may need additional time due to weather, holidays, confirmation/repeat testing, or equipment maintenance.

Patient Instructions: Dietary supplements containing biotin may interfere in assays and may skew results to be either falsely high or falsely low. For patients receiving the recommended daily doses of biotin, draw samples at least 8 hours following the last biotin supplementation. For patients on mega-doses of biotin supplements, draw samples at least 72 hours following the last biotin supplementation.

Description: Measurement of thyroglobulin antibodies is useful in the diagnosis and management of a variety of thyroid disorders including Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, certain types of goiter, and to monitor patients who have had their thyroid gland removed because of thyroid cancer. The presence of these antibodies can lead to the destruction of the thyroid gland and are more likely to appear after trauma to, or inflammation of, the gland.

Limitations: Heterophil antibodies may produce falsely-elevated results.
